They mess about on corkboards.

In the previous post we did something a little different. If you missed it then no worries, it was just a slightly different approach to having a chat with each other, playing around a little, and even discussing IM too. The link is down now as otherwise it would go on for ever, but the gist of it was that we used corkboard.me to post little post-it notes about anything that we wanted. They could be edited, moved around a board, or deleted.

And, not surprisingly there are some real idiots out there who thought it would be fun to delete everything that people wrote, just for the hell of it. I would like whoever did it to answer the “why” in the comments section, yeah right.

Anyway, it was good fun, something a little unusual, and if nothing else it may have given a little inspiration for ideas on what to put on blogs and sites etc. The simplicity of making cool graphics with such programs can really juice up how a site looks if you do a simple screen grab of your results. It is certainly worth trying to think a little outside of the box and getting some graphics on your site that make you something different to the rest.

I saved a load of screen grabs so here are some of the highlights. We did actually have some interesting discussions as well as some fun.

Corkboard Fun

Here we go:

Cool huh?

It certainly made a change to answering questions in the comments section.

Let me know if you enjoyed it. I know it had its drawbacks, especially the fact that some Muppet kept deleting everything, but it also kind of made it more fun too. Anyway, comments are open again and normal business is resumed.

  1. Very cool! I have a couple of questions regarding discussions on the corkboard. First, what do you advise is a good strategy for crosslinking between your satellite sites and your main site? Should links on the satellite site to the main site be on the satellite site sidebar, in the posts, footer, or where? And is it safe to link from your main site back to the satellite site or does that imply affiliation in Google’s eyes?

Second question is how do you keep prices current in your Amazon product posts? Prices on Amazon seem to fluctuate fairly often, so do you just have to keep up with it and risk giving people inaccurate pricing sometimes or is there some automated way of keeping prices current?

Thanks, Dave. This is my first comment but I’ve been reading the site for a bit and really appreciate all the IM help!

For maximum juice I would only link from the satellite sites to the main site, one way only. In content links carry more weight and I would link from a home page post that has relevant content for the link.

I never post prices. The only way you can do it is with something like Reviewazon but I do all my links etc manually. It is against Amazon’s T and C’s to post false prices so I feel it is best not to provide them at all. Plus, you will prob get more clicks and thus the cookie of people have to click your link to find the price.

Thanks for dropping by Chris, hope that helps.

I havta remember that. About prices, I mean…CTA “Click here to see the lowest price” or what have you (assuming it is).

    You said that waaaaaay back…

BTW, I visited your corkboard 3 times that day. It was CRACK…

    Time-sucking crack.

WAY too fun, thanks for the diversion. It was a helluvanidea.

No probs, it was good fun, but it was kind of addictive too. The thing is that it will be there forever too. I didn’t store the URL though or I would keep going back. Hopefully no one posts anything to OTT πŸ˜‰

  2. I put up a lot of the pictures, and the knight is definitely smoking a hookah and not a bong….

Someone put a sticky next to that picture that said the next google update will target EMDs. What are EMDs? If anyone knows.

Anyways, the last question I asked on the corkboard got deleted before anyone got to see it. When you are adding posts to a general site, you said that you will usually use “easy” buying keywords. I was wondering if you often upload a lot of articles in the same niche, or if you would test the viability of a niche on your general site entirely with a post titled something like “buy corkboards cheap online”.

Chances are when I start fleshing out my general sites I’m going to target the lowest hanging fruit I can find, I’m just curious about your strategies.

    Thanks Dave.

Exact Match Domains, I can feel it coming Josh, but we will have to see.

As to the approach for testing, it depends. If there are quite a few products I will put up a good number of posts. The reality is that conversions can be very different even for the same niche and can be very product specific. But I do often do as in your example and aim for a few buying terms in one post title if it is for a general set of keywords.

But you will see better sales if you hone in on terms for an actual product.

    Hits from the Hookah πŸ˜‰

I think your right. Exact match domains seems like kind of a pointless thing to target now though, I haven’t tried making xfactor sites in almost a year, but I’m willing to bet they are almost impossible to get now. It was hard enough a year ago…

Thanks Dave. I have a lot to think about.

Dave do you have a Hookah?

My German friends told me that almost everyone in Europe has one in their living room.

    Vote -1 Vote +1Dave Reply:

Just one? Most Europeans have a Hookah in every room of the house for convenience πŸ˜‰

    Hey Josh
I wouldn’t discount exact match domains just yet. They still work very well. My personal opinion is that G may not weight them so heavily in the future but as long as you’re not buying spammy EMDs they should continue to do well.

Before Xmas we purchased a few EMDs to act as satellite sites for a larger site and it didn’t take much effort apart from a bit of base linking, drip feeding content and time to see those sites now top.

  3. I’m so glad you posted all the screen grabs! It’s the first time I’ve been able to read the conversations.

I’m afraid the corkboard didn’t like me, I couldn’t get the hang of that black rectangle box. Every time I clicked on it, it shunted me to the far left or right or just showed me half a sticky. I gave up after a couple of attempts. And I have a wide screen monitor too!

    Vote -1 Vote +1Dave Reply:

That’s a shame. You could move the square in the black box by sliding it anywhere, but the highlights are up anyway. Good fun.

  4. corkboard was definitely an interesting way to answer comments. Nice change of pace. I like how you put it all together on this post to give everyone a better sense of the conversation that was going on.

    Vote -1 Vote +1Dave Reply:

Thanks Dude, it was fun, and definitely made a change.

  5. I couldn’t figure out how to navigate it at first, I thought it was a joke…then you or someone posted the “HELLO, Beavis! Use the MAP.”

That helped, and Google Docs has a similar feature, where anyone can edit an article if you allow permissions to it – but not nearly as fun.

Definitely a good tool to use though to edit for your writers to see, and free to use – same kind of idea, collaborative.

  6. Hey Dave,

You’ve kept very quiet about the google update. Did you get hit much? Guess all you guys who said get away from thin sites were right!

    @Jamie Sandford,

All cool here, didn’t really notice anything apart from a few Hubs dropping for a few days. Hopefully you did fine too, even some 5 page support sites came through unscathed!

  7. Dave, did your cat come home yet?

    Vote -1 Vote +1Dave Reply:

Unfortunately not. Poor Naruto. He has been gone for 2 weeks now. He has made it through 6 years in the wilds, had half an ear torn off, had a head that swelled up to double its size. Was more scar tissue than anything else, made a wild Catalan Cat hide up an Olive tree while he sat at the bottom and “vibed” it.

Survived even though we found him outside the house at about 2 weeks old, lived out for 10 days in the worst snow for 40 years in Spain, and killed about anything under Dog size in few square miles radius.

But of course, as soon as we get him micro-chipped, get him a passport, pay for an operation to get a dodgy claw removed and get stitches he goes and doesn’t come back.

Anyway, just wanted to write a little homage to my EVIL Cat. I will actually kind of miss you buddy, it only took 6 years but you were OK Dude.

  8. Hey Dave, I missed out on the corkboard fun but for a couple weeks now I’ve been slowly reading all of your old posts including the comments and trying my best to apply what I can to my stuff. Just wanted to say thanks for the fantastic info and inspiration you provide – I’ve been doing pretty good in the earnings dept but I think some of your info can really help push me to the limits.

    Vote -1 Vote +1Dave Reply:

I thank you. I hope that it does inspire a little, but all the great info people leave in the comments is really what makes this site, long may it continue.

    Vote -1 Vote +1Chezfat Reply:

I second that, the comments are ridiculously helpful and worth reading if you can invest enough time into them. See you around.

  9. I read something up there on the cork boards about people wondering how to put the images in like you do –

I installed the TinyMCE plugin, which lets you easily put tables in your post – makes it very easy to do those images across, with clickable links right underneath them, all nice and lined up and centered with minimal fuss.

    Vote -1 Vote +1Dave Reply:

Thanks, I am sure a lot of people will appreciate it.

  10. Dude. Cats especially should be kept indoors. They’re domesticated and kill other wild sentient creatures for sport and not so much for food.

Plus they’ll live longer indoors and cost less to keep healthy.

    Vote -1 Vote +1Dave Reply:

    @Cat’s Meow,

I don’t agree at all and that is a sentiment not based on reality. He has only wished to spend about 10 days overnight in the house a year, Cats are not the same as Dogs at all. We live in the middle of the country in a warm climate and unlike Dogs left wild he would never attack a person or large animal. He was wild when out and was a natural part of the environment. He killed to eat.

I have seen him attack and kill a large snake and then eat it. Same with mice etc. He would go days without food we bought and had a great 6 years living every Cats dream.

    Vote -1 Vote +1Josh Reply:

My grandma’s cat will skip on the food in his bowl and go outside and kill things to eat.

The same cat also disappeared for several months and then came back. Your cat might be fine Dave, I wouldn’t assume that it’s dead yet.

    Thanks Josh, I hope so.

That comment from Cats Meow really annoyed me. Apparently they have a PETA email address although I don’t know if they are a part of them in reality. But comments like that without knowing the situation are silly.

My Cat was born wild, appeared here at a few days old, didn’t know how to lap milk or eat. I saved him by feeding him milk off my finger. I live in a country where the front door is open more than it is closed and I am supposed to keep him inside, now THAT is unnatural, much like keeping a bird in a cage.

    Rant over.

    Vote -1 Vote +1Cat Reply:

I agree with you Dave. Cats need fresh air and exercise, just like we do, and they also need the mental stimulation of a varied environment. Some cats are happy to stay indoors, but by no means all.

I hope your kitty returns soon. I’ve heard of cats reappearing after being missing for over a year, so there’s always hope. He might just be p’d off with you for taking him to the vet & has gone off to sulk for a few weeks πŸ˜‰

“Plus they’ll live longer indoors and cost less to keep healthy.”
@catsmeow – many cats will not be psychologically healthy if they’re kept cooped up inside all the time. Better for them to have a shorter but happy life than a long miserable one, if it comes to that.

I’m happier when my cats are inside, but they would go crazy if they couldn’t go out, and it would be cruel to make them suffer just for my own peace of mind, and to save money. As for the critters they kill (and often eat, despite having plenty of food inside) – I feel very sorry for them, but unfortunately it’s part and parcel of keeping cats. Anyone who has a problem with their carnivorous nature shouldn’t keep them as pets.

    Vote -1 Vote +1Dave Reply:

Thanks, and an apt name under the circumstances. He may well have gone off to sulk, I hope so. I totally agree with all that you said.

It is about a quality of life not longevity. He is a wild thing and his home is out in the wilds, not cooped up in a house, that is unnatural, same as it would be if we never go the delights of the fresh air and the beauty of nature.

Let’s hope Naruto is just being grumpy, but he has never been gone so long so I think he may have met his match (finally) out there in the Catalan wilds. A while back we also had to take him to the vets as he had 3 air rifle pellets stuck in his head, 2 in his actual mouth, but his head was so hard that they could not penetrate, I can’t believe the cruelty of some people at times. But a mere Gun will not stop my Cat, it must have been a Cabra or Jabali, that would be a fair fight then.

@Dave, Really hate to say this, but it could also be poison.

Don’t know about Catalan, but down here in Andalucia the cateto farmers regularly put down poisoned meat to kill foxes, caring nothing for the welfare of other animals like dogs that go for walks with their owners in the campo. Many older generation Spanish men have zero compassion for animals as pets and can be the most cruel, uncaring cabrones jodas putas on this planet. You only have to see one of those jilipollas beating their donkey half to death with a stick or find a bunch of dead whippets hanging from trees (what hunters do to their dogs at the end of the hunting season) to see what callous mo’fo’s they are.

I had a friend lose his 4 year old healthy dog to their poisoned traps. I’d often would find those traps sneakily placed in remote parts of my own damn farm putting my dog at risk and it made me wild. Apparently, its a slow and very painful death. I swear if I ever catch anyone putting down poison on my land I’ll take a big stick beat the crap out of them. It makes me bloody mad.

Hope it isn’t so with your cat, dude.

    Vote -1 Vote +1Wifey Reply:

@Terry, Hoping you’re wrong. The farmers that work the land near us are all extremely happy about our dogs since they are having less cabra and jabali damage to the almonds and olives.

So fingers crossed they probably wouldn’t bother. I know in other areas near here it is a problem, but so far not here. Also there are quite a few fincas with resident mice catching cats relatively near.

If Naruto has gone to the kitty heaven that is snakes on a plate, it is coz he was fighting something he shouldn’t have been – far more his style!

    Vote -1 Vote +1Dave Reply:

Yeah, it’s a bit of a mad situation. The local Forestales told us in no uncertain terms that we cannot have our Dogs loose if we are not with them. But all the Finca owners want us to let them run around all day and night so the goats and boar stay up higher and don’t eat their trees.

We have a happy medium where the Dogs walk around with us on different Fincas and get let out after 10 for a a bit of a bark to tell the mountain who is in charge. It was Naruto who owned the mountain but………

    Vote -1 Vote +1Dave Reply:

Yeah it is common Terry, although not around here thank God. I have not heard of it at all in our parts.

Most of the old Dudes and family have hunting Dogs for Jabili that rampage about the place but we ares o high up that they don’t really want to mess with the wildlife so they can kill it with guns not poison.

We don’t have any neighbors just a few fincas above us for Olives and Almonds and that is it so I don’t think it was poison. But the bloody peeps that shot him with an air rifle are a concern.

As to the welfare of the hunting Dogs, I try not to think about it. They are in until the hunting season then half of them get lost in the mountains. We have our Dogs fenced in now all around the house so they are safe and secure although the fear of a Catalan and a shy Dog is a strange thing to behold.

@Cat’s Meow, STFU. “Domesticated animals” kill for “kicks”? Everyone move your infant into the refrigerator/broom closet, we have “domesticated cats that kill for fun”. Cows are domesticated as well… try keeping one of those inside all day long. Bloody noob.

    Vote -1 Vote +1Cat Reply:

    @Cat’s Meow,

Yes, cats don’t kill for ‘sport’, they kill because they’re wired that way. A cat will attack just about any small moving object whether they’re hungry or not – it’s a purely instinctive behaviour. And that’s completely different from actively choosing to kill things just for the fun of it. It’s humans who do that, and it would be better not to project the failings of our own species onto other animals.

  11. Hey guys, I’m looking for some opinions.

How low of competition do you think you would need to see on the first page for a keyword to rank for it(top 3-ish) using only 5 BMRs?

The pages will be on an a fairly old site, about a year, and I intend to add about 100 pages to start with.
I’m doing research right now using Keyword Tool Dominator and then I’m going to run it through Niche Refinery on TKA.

  12. I set up an MMO group on Convore – it’s a new fangled thing that crosses forum/chat/message board.

In order to keep it from the general public prying eyes, I greated 50 invites here:

It should offer the fun of a corkboard (albeit slightly less novelty) but without people being able to delete stuff.
